Probably dating from the second half of the 19th century, these glazed terracotta pottery from the Island of Borneo were most often used to preserve medicinal potions concocted by Chinese herbalists who had been present in Malaysia since the 15th century.
They could also be used to preserve salt, a luxury and rare commodity at the time, which is why these pots were only found in the homes of the wealthiest on the island.
Each piece is unique.
