Orientalist

Orientalism is a literary and artistic movement born in Western Europe in the 18th century. Through its breadth and vogue, throughout the 19th century, it marked the interest and curiosity of artists and writers for the countries of the west (the Maghreb) or the Levant (the Middle East).

Born in the fascination of the Ottoman Empire, this exotic trend is associated with all the artistic currents of the 19th century, academic, romantic, realist or even impressionist. It is present in architecture, music, painting, literature, poetry…

    €280.00
Large hand-woven and hand-knotted hallway rug in pure wool.
    Vintage and patchwork Zeki Muren
    Width: 60 cm - Length: 182 cm.
The word kilim is used to designate a woolen carpet with a flat point that is mainly found in the Near East, in the Caucasus as well as in Central Asia and which saw the light of day nearly ten thousand years ago as attested by many remains.
Until very recently, kilims were not made for commercial purposes. They have therefore retained all their authenticity.
They represent both the memory and the identity of the sedentary, nomadic and semi-nomadic peoples who weave them.
Each tribe, each village has its own style: shimmering or sober colors, complex or refined decorations depending on the region. Their patterns constitute a form of symbolic writing inherited from ancient shamanist beliefs.
The kilim is a unique work, inspired, authentic, modern by the power of its graphics, eternal by its sources of inspiration.
A hallway rug of great beauty for an exceptional interior.
    A unique piece.

Josep Tapiró i Baró is a Spanish painter born in Reus, February 7, 1836 and died in Tangier on October 4, 1913. He is known for his watercolors representing portraits of the inhabitants of Tangier. He studied drawing and painting with his childhood friend Mariano Fortuny in Barcelona under the direction of Domingo Soberano.
The two friends then completed their training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. Thanks to many trips across Europe between 1863 and 1870, he consolidated his style, strongly influenced by his friend. They travel together to Morocco for the first time in 1871, and following this decisive event in the life of the two artists, Tapiró decides to settle in Tangier, in 1876, where he will remain, for almost forty years, until upon his death in 1913.

    THE LEGEND :

During the Arab domination in Sicily, in the city of Palermo there was an Arab suburb called "La Kalsa".

Unfortunately, the young Moor was already married and had several children ... as soon as the young woman found out that he could leave to find his family, one day she waited for night and killed him while he slept soundly.
